SELECTED POEMS by John Lars Zwerenz

A Sonnet (From Selected Poems by John Lars Zwerenz)

By the age-old balcony sways a linden tree; It frames the alcove's bay with gleaming leaves of green, As its wood absorbs the sun; unseen, My lady roves through tepid gales carried from the sea. About she walks, by moss-covered stones, On a paved path, near a bed of roses, Which wavers in a row, and gently discloses Melodies of solemn tones. Now and then a whisper stirs in the bower; A rustle plays in the tall, sallow reeds. She innocently smiles in this soft, monastic hour; Her heart is at peace in the wake of good deeds. Her pace is of an angel's, with each foot that is laid; She is clad in a pea coat, and her hair is in a braid. ~ John Lars Zwerenz
